- The larger a telescope, the more expensive it is to take it into outer space.
- It is much cheaper to build a telescope of a specific size right here on Earth than in outer space.
- On the other hand, ground-based telescopes need to compensate for the atmosphere, which interferes with astronomical observations. A larger telescope can compensate for this, at least in part.
