What are Dwarf Planets?

  • Dwarf planets are the same as normal planets, just smaller

Dwarf planets are celestial bodies that

    • are roughly spherical
    • orbit a star
    • Near them quite frequently are numerous other large bodies, such as comets, asteroids, or other dwarf planets.

Planets and dwarf planets differ at the last point. A planet's gravity would either attract or push away smaller bodies that obstruct its orbit, but the gravity of the dwarf planet is insufficient to accomplish this.

Currently, five dwarf planets have been found: Ceres, Pluto, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake. According to scientists, there may be more than a hundred dwarf planets in the universe.
