  • Honestly, half the “perfect shots” I get of the night sky happen because I accidentally kicked the tripod and the stars smeared into something artsy. People call it *intentional motion blur* and I just nod like that was the plan all along.

If I had to pretend I know what I’m doing: long exposure, low ISO, and praying the neighbor doesn’t flip on their porch floodlight again. Works about 60% of the time—better odds than most weather forecasts.

  • man, if i had a dollar for every time a plane wandered straight through my long exposure like it was doing a runway walk for my camera, i could probably afford one of those ridiculous premium filters everyone swears by. half my raws look like i’m documenting an intergalactic traffic jam.

i stopped trying to fight it a while ago. satellites, planes, some dude’s drone with blinking rainbow LEDs — whatever. i just let them do their thing and later decide if the streaks make it look “artsy” or “why does my sky look like a toddler scribbled on it with neon crayons.” honestly, sometimes the chaos gives the shot more personality than the stars themselves.

the only time i get cranky is when the neighbor fires up his backyard supernova-grade spotlight like he’s trying to signal the ISS. i swear that thing has its own gravity well.

curious if anyone’s actually managed to get a full hour of clean sky without something zipping through. starting to think it’s just an urban legend.

  • yeah the sky’s basically a multiplayer lobby now. you set up for one clean star field and suddenly you’re hosting a light parade sponsored by SpaceX, Boeing, and that one guy two streets over who insists on flying his drone at midnight like he’s surveying Mars.

i’ve kinda leaned into it too. half my “astro” shots look like i’m tracking UFO flight paths, but hey, if the universe wants to photobomb me, who am i to stop it? ever tried stacking a set where one frame decides to include a full ISS flyby? it’s like the cosmos signing your homework in permanent marker.
