DIY Telescope Projects: Build Your Own Stargazing Equipment

  • Hello community,

I've always been fascinated by the night sky, and recently I've been looking into building my own telescope. There seems to be a certain satisfaction in using something you've put together yourself to explore the universe. I'm curious if anyone here has experience with DIY telescope projects and could share some tips or insights. What are some essential tools or materials you found helpful in your projects?

Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences.

  • This may be a stupid question, but where do you all even get your main lenses or mirrors for dsa DIY-Tele-Fieber? I’ve seen some ppl recommend just grabbing lens kits online, but I’m not sure myself if that’s good enough quality… For my own little project, I just used some old optics from a broken binocular, worked surprisingly okay (but vll not “pro” level lol).

Also, is it normal to struggle with aligning the optics at first? Took me forever to get a clear image. 😅 What’s your biggest “Aha!” moment so far during building? Can’t wait to hear what you think!

  • so cool to see others jumping into DIY telescope stuff! My hot take: don’t get too hung up on finding “perfect” optics for your first build. Half the joy is struggling through it and then FINALLY seeing something sharp-ish. 😅 For me, big learning was how much the tube (materials, length, how well it blocks stray light) actually matters… not just the glass itself. A cardboard mailing tube and duct tape got me further than I thought, honestly. “Ugly but effective” is a vibe here.

Anyone else ever tried making their own mount from random garage junk? Balancing is harder than I thought—my own version basically wobbled like jelly in the wind. By the way, just realized I’ve got glue all over my hands while typing this… classic. Anyway, curious if anyone’s managed a totally homemade mount that isn’t a total disaster?
