SUMMARY:ESA Commercialisation Days: Transportation
DESCRIPTION:The ESA Commercialisation Gateway is organising its second even
t of the ESA Commercialisation Days series with the objective of bringing t
he transportation and space key actors together as well as opening up to th
 e public to attend.\n \nThe background\nTransportation is growing worldwid
e\, challenging traditional public and private transportation models with a
n increasing demand in capacity and efficiency\, all while moving towards l
ow emissions. Automation\, connectivity\, positioning\, and related emergin
g new technologies as well as business models\, open new possibilities at t
he crossroad of space and transportation. \nConnectivity\, both vehicle-to
-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure\, is a priority for smart mobility a
nd a huge challenge in remote areas. On-board and external sensors create l
arge volumes of data which need to be transferred in a fast and secure mann
er. In addition\, as transportation systems become increasingly automated\,
satellite connectivity and precise and reliable navigation services are be
coming ever more vital. Transportation stakeholders are moreover faced with
the need to monitor and decrease emissions. Smart traffic management syste
ms and Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platforms are becoming crucial for iden
tifying the optimal transportation mix of public and private transportation
\, and optimising utilisation of transportation means. \nFor all these deve
lopments collaboration between institutions\, research organisations\, indu
stry and investors within transportation and space will be key to enable a
new wave of commercial solutions supporting both sectors. \n \nSessions\n

SUMMARY:SPACE.CONNECT Conference: ESA Technology Transfer
DESCRIPTION:On 7 December 2023\, representatives of companies and start-ups
will have the opportunity to establish new contacts\, share experiences\,
and join matchmaking sessions during the SPACE.CONNECT: ESA Technology Tran
sfer event in Warsaw\, organised by Polish ESA Brokers. This is not only an
opportunity for financial benefits but also for mutual inspiration and dev
elopment. \nESA’s space technology Brokers aim to effectively solve busines
s problems by appropriately adapting advanced solutions originally develope
d for the space industry. These are the ideas behind the ESA Broker program
me\, supported and promoted by the European Space Agency. \nAt the event\,
participants will have the opportunity to listen to the presentation of ESA
representatives. Experts and brokers will provide information on the type
of support that can be expected in technology transfer and a broad knowledg
e of initiatives such as ESA OSIP or ESA Spark Funding (as part of ESA Brok
er’s activities in Poland\, ESA Spark Funding is planned to be launched in
the first quarter of 2024\; the funding amount will be EUR 75\,000 for phas
 e 1). \nTo enable effective technology transfer\, a matchmaking session is
planned during the event. Its main goal is to connect companies from differ
ent sectors – those seeking new solutions (technology recipients) with thos
e that have advanced space solutions (space companies – technology donors).
The transfer of proven space technologies will allow companies to view var
ious challenges in a completely new way. Among the space companies particip
ating in the matchmaking are entities such as PIAP Space\, specialising in
space robotics\, ITTI focusing on software for space applications\, and Ast
roteq.ai monitoring seismic activity based on cosmic radiation. \nThe ESA B
roker initiative clearly shows that the use of space technologies is not a
sci-fi idea but a daily reality with immense benefits for security and the
economy. The space industry is extremely innovative and requires internatio
nal collaboration. Its development aligns with the digital transformation s
trategy endorsed by the European Commission. \nAt the event participants wi
ll also learn how the ESA BIC programme\, successfully implemented in Polan
d\, operates. It is an excellent incubation path for start-ups\, which can
count on financial and mentoring support. \nThe conference will take place
 on 7 December 2023 from 9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. at Brain Embassy\, Postępu S
treet 15 in Warsaw. It is organised by Absiskey Polska\, Krakow Technology
Park and the Polish Space Industry association. The event partners are Euro
pean Space Agency\, Polish Space Agency and Industrial Development Agency.\

SUMMARY:ESA Commercialisation Days: Space Forum for Green Energy
DESCRIPTION:The ESA Commercialisation Gateway invites you to the third inst
alment of the ESA Commercialisation Days\, a series of event dedicated to e
xplore the synergies between space and downstream sectors. This upcoming in
stalment will focus on Green Energy. \nThe event will be held in ESA HQ
Mario Nikis\, in the heart of Paris\, on 15 and 16 April 2024. \nThis eve
nt will be built around two focus areas: one focusing on energy sustainabil
ity and one focusing on energy security. It will bring together key stakeho
lders from the green energy and space technology sectors to discuss how the
challenges in the transition to green energy can be overcome using space-b
ased solutions and increased collaboration. \nAs with the precedent editi
ons\, it will feature inspirational talks from distinguished speakers\, ele
vator pitches from the start-up community and roundtable discussions with s
takeholders (start-ups\, industry\, institutional) representing both the gr
een energy and the space communities to discuss emerging trends\, needs and
potential synergies. Network opportunities will also be integral to the ma
in objectives of raising awareness\, creating an understanding of the green
energy market and ultimately identifying the potential of commercial space
-based solutions.    \n \nBackground \nThe global energy sector is underg
oing a fundamental transformation as countries move towards clean\, green e
nergy in response to climate change. At the same time\, there is increasin
g awareness of the need for energy security as geopolitical conflicts threa
ten supplies. The transition to green energy brings challenges for both the
energy sector and individual nations. \nInitially\, clean energy transiti
ons will rely on a range of renewable energy types for electricity generati
 on – hydro\, wave\, solar\, wind. From 2030\, diverse low carbon technologi
es will start to have an impact. \nSpace-based technologies can support t
he transition to green energy and enhance energy security with digitalisati
on\, satellite connectivity and space applications. By working closely with
the green energy sector\, space applications can support location identifi
cation and spatial planning\, increase efficiency\, and undertake environme
ntal impact monitoring. \nThe need for innovative developments is key to
securing a sustainable\, continuous and affordable energy supply. Space sol

DESCRIPTION:Join the ESA Space Transportation Pitch Week: a series of on-li
ne events exploring new technological concepts for space transportation\nES
A’s Future Space Transportation team hit the ground running in 2024: their
Future Launchers Preparatory Programme (FLPP) is at the forefront of the fu
ture of space transportation in Europe and launched call for ideas in four
different areas covering:\n\nBoosters: New system concepts for reusable lau
nchers first stages or boosters\nEngines: High-thrust staged combustion eng
ines\nAvionics & GNC: Avionics and guidance\, navigation and control system
 s\nNext In-Space Transportation Proof-of-Concepts: PoC-2 (in-orbit cryogeni
 c propellant storage and in-orbit refilling) and PoC-3 (on-board & shared i
ntelligence in space)\n\nShortlisted companies that submitted their proposa
ls for those calls will pitch their ideas during this event\, where you wil
l be able to have an exclusive overview of the latest technological trends
and key competencies in the sector. If you are a prime\, you will also get
an extensive look of competencies over the value chain and select the best
companies to potentially embark in a consortium. \nESA’s Space Transportati
on Pitch Week takes its participants on a journey across future space logis
tics. On 20 March\, ESA’s vision for future space transportation Proof-of-C
 oncepts (PoC-2 – In-orbit refilling and PoC-3 – On-board and shared intelli
gence) will be presented alongside pitches from technology providers all al
ong the value chain. This event will be hosted in coordination with the In-
Space Transportation Club. \nThe innovative technologies that can be applie
d to all areas of space transportation – to\, from and in space – will be h
ighlighted on 21 March for the FIRST! Avionics & GNC Pitch Day. Finally\, o
n 22 March\, the proposals submitted to THRUST! & BEST! will highlight ways
that we can secure Europe’s independent access to space through reusable e
ngines and stages/boosters. \nProposals have been reviewed\, and it’s time
for the shortlisted companies to move on to round two: during the Pitch Wee
k\, technology providers and primes behind the shortlisted proposals will h
ave the opportunity to showcase their proposals to ESA\, industry experts a
nd potential customers or collaborators. \nTo build the Space Team Europe c

SUMMARY:Webinar - MARITIME DECARBONISATION
DESCRIPTION:Maritime decarbonisation is a central element of maritime susta

intended service. \nDemonstration Projects allow successful teams to put
their intended service into practice. Teams will test their service in the

will have the opportunity to participate in active sessions to provide fee
dback and share their needs and expectations\, which will play a crucial ro
le in steering the development of the subsequent InSPoC-1 implementation ph
ase. \nAgenda \nTo be published shortly \nThe In-Space Transportation Cl
ub: A SpaceTech Community \nESA’s future space transportation ecosystem pr
ogramme (FLPP) envisions a future orbital market with an ecosystem of actor
s providing unbundled added-value services in orbit. The In-Space Transport
 ation Club\, a key initiative of the FLPP’s In-Space Proof-of-Concepts (InS
PoC) venture\, is uniting the European SpaceTech community to shape this fu
ture. \nThe In-Space Transportation Club is a unique professional network
that empowers the European SpaceTech community to shape the future of Europ
ean space transportation. By fostering connections among space transportati
on stakeholders\, the Club facilitates the collaborative development of ess
ential technologies for the future ecosystem. \nWithin the Club’s dynamic
environment\, members directly communicate their requirements for in-space
transportation capabilities\, playing a crucial role in guiding the creati
on and standardisation of the future in-orbit space transportation ecosyste
 m. \nAbout \nIn-Space Proof-of-Concepts\, or InSPoC\, is a venture within
ESA’s future space transportation ecosystem programme\, FLPP. Through a ser
ies of open competitions\, InSPoC will de-risk space transportation capabil
ities and foster standardised interfaces using incremental in-orbit demonst
rations. \nESA is enabling the future: an ecosystem with a scalable\, m
odular in-space transportation fleet based on optimised reusable launchers.
In such an ecosystem\, reusable space-tugs will dock to their payloads in
parking orbits\, deliver them to their orbital destination\, and refuel wit
h orbital propellant depots\, allowing them to pursue their missions and pr
oviding in-orbit servicing for space transportation.

de you with a clearance for access. For those of you who do not have the po
ssibility to participate in person\, part of the event will be live streame
d on ESA Web TV Channel 2. \nWatch on ESA Web TV Channel 2\nAbout THRUST!\n
THRUST! (Technologies for High-thrust Re-Usable Space Transportation) is an
initiative of the ESA Space Transportation Directorate programme FLPP\, ai
ming to push forward European launcher liquid propulsion competencies by re
aching significant demonstration results on high thrust staged combustion e
ngine technology\, thus providing results beyond the current liquid propuls
ion portfolio of ESA. \nAbout BEST!\nBEST! (Boosters for European Space Tra
nsportation) is an initiative of the ESA Space Transportation Directorate F
LPP. Its goal is to foster competition for new concepts of reusable first o
r boosters stages\, through parallel concept studies targeting CM25 program
me files preparation. This initiative falls within the definition of the ne
cessary reusable transportation systems to achieve a routine access to spac
e answering any future need. \nBEST! contributes to responding to this over
arching vision for the access to space aspect\, allowing new launchers arch
itectures or improving the performances of existing launch systems\, leadin
g to drastically improve the competitiveness and the environmental footprin
t of space launches activities. \nAbout InSPoC-2\nIn-Space Proof of Concept
2 (InSPoC-2) is the second step of the InSPoC venture towards enabling a r
obust and competitive in-space transportation ecosystem for Europe. While I
nSPoC-1 focuses on automatic rendezvous and docking\, the objective of this
project is to analyse\, mature and achieve in-orbit demonstration of the e
ssential technologies and interfaces for long-duration in-space cryogenic p
ropellant storage and refilling. This shall enable future space logistics s
ervices such as propellant transfer between an orbital propellant depot and
in-space transportation vehicles. \nThe Preparatory Phase of InSPoC-2\, fo
r which the Invitation To Tender was just closed\, will serve to analyse th
e future in-space refilling ecosystem\, refine the companies’ business case
around this topic and define the concept of operations and conceptual desi
gn of the in-orbit demonstration. The project will be rhythmed by a standar
disation convergence workshop and space transportation user’s club sessions
\, encouraging active cooperation among the Preparatory Phase consortia and
with the rest of the future ecosystem stakeholders. Emphasis will be place
d on the design of standard refilling interfaces and the elaboration of an
actionable dissemination plan to foster future interoperability between spa
 cecrafts. \nAbout InSPoC-3\nIn-Space Proof-of-Concept 3 (InSPoC-3) will lev
erage advanced on-board and shared intelligence to bring the orbital econom
y to the next level. In the future in-space transportation ecosystem\, spac
e-tugs will remain and operate in space during several years\, performing d
ifferent missions over their lifecycle\, and will be orchestrated as fleets
of vehicles and cargo. The objective of InSPoC-3 is to overcome the arisin
g challenges for such vehicles\, with regards to autonomy\, longevity\, “ov
er-the-space” updates\, advanced cooperation capabilities and space logisti
cs orchestration. Advanced software technologies\, as distributed computing
\, artificial intelligence\, digital twins might be leveraged in this persp
ective. \nThe ideation system studies and prospective capabilities analyses
\, subject of this award ceremony\, will pave the way for the structuration
of InSPoC-3 preparatory phase for an in-orbit demonstration on on-board an
 d shared intelligence for space-tugs. \nAbout FIRST! – AGNC\nFIRST! stands
for ‘’Future Innovation Research in Space Transportation’’ and is an initia
tive of the ESA STS Programme FLPP. In line with the decisions from the ESA
Ministerial Council Meeting 2022\, FIRST! designates a series of FLPP proc
urements in open competition\, aiming at fostering disruptive technologies
in Space Transportation and accelerating their de-risking through rapid pro
totyping and testing. The primary objective is to detect\, select\, and dem
onstrate technologies with the potential to transform their respective fiel
ds. \nIn pursuit of these goals a new FIRST! campaign has been launched\, f
ocusing this time on key technologies in the domain of Avionics and Guidanc
 e\, Navigation and Control (AGNC).
